Some woods are valued for grain. Agar wood (沉香, chen xiang) is valued for what the tree suffered. It is the dark, resin-saturated heartwood of Aquilaria trees, formed only where infection has invaded a wound, and only after years of the tree's slow, living response. Where the resin has pooled, the wood turns dense, dark, and faintly sweet. Held to the wrist or warmed by a hand, it releases a scent that has no true substitute: woody, honeyed, a little medicinal, deepening as it warms.
Tradition holds that the Buddha named the smoke of burning agar the "scent of nirvana." Whether or not one takes that literally, it captures the wood's place in Buddhist life: burned as incense in meditation and offering for well over a thousand years across Buddhist, Hindu, and Islamic practice alike, one of the few materials sacred to all three.
The full story of how it's formed and carved (the wounding, the decades, the famous "blind cut") is on our process page: How Agar Wood Is Made.
Grading Agar Wood
The classic standard is density, tested the old way: drop the wood in water.
- Sinking grade (沉水, chen shui): so saturated with resin it sinks. The highest grade. Historically priced above gold.
- Semi-sinking (半沉, ban chen): hovers or sinks slowly. Fine quality.
- Floating: resin is present but light. Everyday grade. Most beaded jewelry lives here.
Origin matters too: Vietnamese localities (Hoi An (惠安, hui an), Nha Trang (芽庄, ya zhuang)) and Hainan (海南, hai nan) have famous reputations, each with its own scent signature. A practiced nose can tell them apart. Most of us can't, and any honest seller will say so.
The Named Patterns
Where resin collects inside the wood, it forms figures, and named figures carry named value. Two we carry as pieces in their own right. Neither can be carved on purpose. Both are revealed only by the cut, which is exactly the point.
Eye of Buddha (佛眼, fo yan, "Buddha eye"): a pocket of dark resin set in pale wood, round and defined, with a lighter center where the infection that started it sealed over. Cut at the right angle, it reads as an eye looking back out of the bead. Agar resin gathers around a wound; when the carver's cut crosses that pocket cleanly you get an eye, angle it wrong and the same pocket is a smudge. The pattern is decided inside the log before the blade touches it. A watching eye reads as protection in nearly every bead-carving tradition - the same association that gives the Dzi (天珠, tian zhu) its eyes gives this pattern its name. What to look for: the eye should sit in the wood, not on it. Printed or stained dots float on the surface and repeat identically bead to bead. Natural eyes vary in size, depth, and placement. That variation is the signature.
Heaven's Line (油脂线, you zhi xian, "oil lines"): fine hairlines of dark resin running through pale heartwood like threads dropped through the grain. Resin travels along the wood's vessels in thin streams: dense, slow infection years leave lines, fast ones leave clouds. The finest, most legible lines are the oldest - which is why heavy, dark, line-rich pieces sink (沉水, chen shui) and command the top of the market. A clean heaven's line against pale wood is one of the most readable patterns agar wood produces: it shows across a room, which no subtle cloud pattern can do. Real lines taper, branch, and wander. Printed imitations run even and identical, the same tell as everywhere else in this guide.
A Note on Scent Strength
All agar wood carries the resin's scent, but strength tracks resin content: sinking-grade agar can fill a room, while a floating-grade strand may only whisper until warmed in the hand. Neither is a defect. It's what the tree gave. In our listings, when a piece is marked "fragrant," it means the scent reaches you easily from a fair distance.
Caring for Agar Wood
- Keep it dry. Water dulls the surface oils. Remove before showering or swimming.
- The scent revives with body warmth: wearing it is the maintenance.
- If the scent fades, seal the piece overnight in a small bag with a scrap of the raw wood. It re-conditions.
- Avoid perfume and household chemicals on the surface.
